About the Family roots in Co. Down, Ireland, of James McCullough 1820-1910 of Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia
What is known is that our McCullough's were farmers for at least three generations in Ireland starting with James McCullough abt.1760-1815 my GGGGGrandfather, he farmed in the Townland of Tullynagee in the County of Down. His son Thomas McCullough unk.-unk. my GGG Grandfather,was also a farmer in the Townland of Tullynagee, and his son James McCullough 1820-1910 my GGGrandfather, prior to emigrating to Victoria, Australia, in 1854, was a farmer in the Townland of Ballykeigle in Co. Down.
James abt. 1760-1815, is listed in the "Freehold Register for Co. Down" the entry is dated 23 Oct. 1783, showing his place of abode as Tullynagee. Another reference was found in the "Index to Down Diosesan Wills" the index showed "McCullough James, Tullynagee, Kilmood, Farmer, Probate 1815". Also in the "Voters Rolls, Deputy Cheque Book of around 1789 for all of Co. Down", lists " James McCullough of Tullynagee with a Freehold worth 10 Pounds".
James abt. 1760-1815 married Mary Edoms in abt. 1780, family history has it that she was the daughter of one Colonel Edoms, Regiment unknown, a pendant with a hand painted portrait of the Colonel was brought to Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia by James' 1760-1815 daughter Mary 1782-1882 in 1852. The top picture is of James and Mary's family home in Tullynagee, Co. Down, the second is the portrait of Colonel Edoms.
James and Mary had atleast four children namely; Mary 1782-1882, she emigrated to Victoria, Australia, accompanied by her neice Elizabeth Russell [nee Jellie] and her husband William Russell and child, aboard the Sailing Ship "El Dorado" arriving in Melbourne in November 1852, Mary and the Russell's settled in Warrnambool, Mary never married. Margaret Stevenson 1789-1870, she also emigrated to Victoria, Australia, with her husband James Jellie 1787-1862 and children aboard the Sailing Ship "Thomas Arbuthnot" arriving in 1841, they settled in the Warrnambool area. Hugh unk.-unk was a Doctor, M.D., he remained in Ireland. Thomas unk.-unk. as mentioned above was a Farmer in the Townland of Tullynagee, Co.Down, he remained in Ireland, he married [Janet] Jennie Abernethy and had atleast seven children namely; Mary bef.1812-unk.married Hugh Bailie in 1826, Elizabeth 1812-unk., married Thomas Bailie in 1838, Jane 1815-1815, Jane 1816-unk. married John Moorhead in 1839. James 1820-1910 married Elinor Moorhead in Killinchy Presbyterian Church in 1843, they had nine children; namely David Moorhead 1844-1849, Thomas 1846-1926, Hugh 1848-1905, my GGrandfather, David Moorhead 1849-1926, John 1851-1935, Margaret Jane 1855-1865, Mary 1857-1865, Agnes 1860-1865, William James 1861-1951. James and Elinor with their four son's emigrated to Victoria, Australia, on board the Clipper Ship "James Baines" arriving in Melbourne in February 1855, James and his family settled in the Warrnambool area. Margaret 1823-unk., Susanna 1829-1907 married William Finley Robb in 1852, they emigrated to Victoria, Australia, aboard the Sailing Ship "Albinus" arriving in Melbourne in August 1853, Susanna and her family settled in North East Victoria.
